Upper School

Welcome to the Upper School at the City of London Freemen’s School.

Pupils moving in to year 9 may have moved up from our Junior School (about 80) or they may be joining us from another School (about 20) and we are acutely aware of the need to help new pupils feel at home. Each Form group in Year 9 (of which there are 6) is made up of a mixture of new and existing pupils. In addition, at the very start of the first term the whole year group goes away on an Activity Weekend that provides an excellent way of everyone getting to know each other.

Upper School pupils are able to make full use of our outstanding facilities and are taught by enthusiastic and highly skilled staff making an environment that provides the best possible encouragement, rather than pressure, for our pupils to do their best. In Years 10 and 11 all our pupils study for ten GCSE subjects and no-one takes any GCSEs early – we are not a ‘hothouse’ but we do have an excellent record of academic success in our GCSE results. With very few exceptions, all of our Upper School pupils move on to our Sixth Form.

But the Upper School is about much more than GCSEs. The quality of the pastoral care and learning support provided to each individual and the extensive range of extra-curricular activities we offer all contribute significantly to the excellent standards achieved by so many of our pupils both inside and outside the classroom.

The Upper School is just as passionate as the Junior School about co-education and encourage all our pupils, whatever their skills and interests, to participate fully in school life. Boys and girls co-exist and flourish – in almost equal numbers – as they have done since the School’s foundation.
