Freemen's Sports Hall

The Good Schools Guide says that we are not a School for couch potatoes and that is certainly the case when it comes to sport. Whether it is within the P.E. and Games curriculum or in representing their House or the School in a whole range of sports, all our pupils are encouraged to ‘have a go’. And surrounded by outstanding facilities – high quality grass pitches, floodlit astro-turf pitches, cricket nets, tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool and large multi-purpose sports hall – it is difficult for any pupil not to want to get involved.

All pupils receive at least two hours per week of timetabled P.E. and Games. There is a wide ranging P.E. curriculum throughout the School with the opportunity to experience gymnastics, swimming, football, dance, rounders, athletics, rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis and basketball as well as all round agility, fitness and ball skills.

During Games boys play rugby and cricket whilst the girls play hockey and tennis. Sixth formers are able to choose from a wide range of sports to get involved in during their weekly Games afternoon.

Outside of the curriculum, the School runs a number of representative squads in a variety of sports and these will undertake regular squad training sessions. Representative sports include rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, swimming, athletics, fencing, netball, rounders and golf. You can see the results of our latest fixtures.

Many of our pupils gain representative honours at county, national and even international level.

In addition to the P.E. and Games staff, the School employs a number of specialist sports coaches to ensure our pupils have access to the best coaching available. Currently we have coaches for Swimming, Cricket, Hockey, Rugby, Squash and Netball.

Physical education plays an important part in the provision of a balanced education and in developing confidence, self awareness and physical well-being. These are just some of the reasons why we regard sport as an integral part of the School.
