City of London Freemen's School

School Life

Vicky Buckman,
Deputy Head

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) reported in 2007 that the personal development of our pupils is “outstanding”. It should be no surprise, therefore, that at the City of London Freemen’s School we believe that School should be about more than just lessons – it is an opportunity to experience different activities, assume new responsibilities and nurture talent. You’ll find an excellent overview of the activities and achievements right across the School in our annual Record of Activities & Achievements and Ashteadian magazine.

The ISI report also commented on our “outstanding” range of extra-curricular activities. Providing opportunities across the Junior and Senior Schools, from Chess to Cooking and from Debating to Duke of Edinburgh Awards, these activities personify the School’s ‘have-a-go’ culture.  As an example of what goes on, why not take a look at the Debating Society.

Sport is important at the School and we have outstanding facilities in which to play. Whether it’s rugby or hockey, fencing or golf we have something to offer everyone.

With a long established reputation for the quality of our Music department, we offer a variety of choirs, ensembles and orchestras and approaching 400 individual music lessons each week.

Now matching music’s reputation our Drama department continues to impress. Award winning productions are becoming the norm, performances at the Edinburgh Fringe a regular event and whole School shows an annual highlight.

Much of what goes on outside the classroom is based around a House system to which all pupils and staff are assigned. The Houses not only give young and older pupils the chance to work together but also enable pupils to take on positions of responsibility that serve them well in adult life.

For those who are boarding at the School, not only do they have the opportunity to get involved in all of the above but they also have their very own activities and events.

The Good Schools Guide 2008 says that we are “not a School for couch potatoes”. We certainly strive to provide a range of activities and facilities that gives everyone the opportunity to have a go.
