City of London Freemen's School

Tests and Interviews

Applicants must have submitted a Registration Form and are required to undertake a pre-test (for Year 9 entry) or entrance test. Most applicants will also be interviewed and we will request a report from the applicant’s current school. The cost of sitting one set of entrance tests is included in the registration fee. If an applicant has already taken one set of tests, there is an additional charge for the pre-tests and entrance tests (£40).

Which tests are taken and when depends on when registration takes place, the year group on entry and the intended year of entry.

For those interested in September 2012, please contact Admissions for more information.

Junior School (7+ to 12+) Entry

Entrance tests and interviews for all years in the Junior School take place in the January immediately preceding entry. Applicants may not take entrance tests more than one year in advance eg a child currently in Year 4 will take the entrance test for Year 6 when they are in Year 5.

For those children not registered in time to take the January entrance tests or for entry to year groups other than Year 3 (7+) and Year 7 (11+), the availability of places will be limited and we recommend that you contact the Admissions Office before submitting a Registration Form.

Entrance tests are currently taken in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Guidelines for Years 3 to 6 entry and sample papers for Years 7 & 8 entry are available.

Year 9 (13+) Entry

Offers of places in Year 9 are based on a Main List which is filled in the following order:

1st Those undertaking pre-tests in the January of their Year 6
2nd Those undertaking pre-tests in the January of their Year 7
3rd Those undertaking entrance tests and interviews in the January of their Year 8
4th Those in Year 8 and registering after the January entrance tests

The further down the order, the fewer places available and a waiting list may be in operation after the Year 7 pre-tests. Please contact the Admissions Office to find out.

Pre-tests are only offered once a year. Late registration means that applicants will have to wait and take the following year’s tests. For those currently in Year 8 we recommend you contact the Admissions Office before submitting a Registration Form.

A place on the Main List means a guaranteed place subject to performance in either Common Entrance (average 60% required) or the Freemen’s School entrance test taken in the January of Year 8. Which of these is required depends on the applicant’s current school.

Pre-tests are currently taken in English, Mathematics and Non-verbal reasoning.  The entrance tests taken in Year 8 are currently in English, Mathematics, Science and a Foreign Language. Sample papers are available.

Sixth Form Entry

Successful applicants will be offered a conditional place which will be subject to external examination performance (eg GCSE).
